Some of you already now, but not all, soooooooo guess who I was out walking with? Yes, Tim, but also - our dog!!! Our family has grown!
Zeus has been a part of our family for just over one month now and it is so great to see him learning how we do things and what we expect of him. It's so cute when he sits at the front door after coming back from a walk without being asked; it doesn't always happen, but he's getting the system down pretty well.
We have discovered Zeus has a little separation anxiety, so we are working on helping him overcome that. We know more exercise for him in this regard is key and we are very thankful for the warmer weather so he can stay out longer for walks. The first week we had Zeus, it was a week of -20 to -30 degrees and he got cold so fast outside! His coat is short and he'd lift up his paws, alternating them, hopping along on three legs to try and avoid the cold ground for a few seconds. We are thinking we'll need to invest in some doggy booties for Zeus next winter and possibly a jacket. I never thought I'd go for dressing up my dog, but it is actually a necessity out here in the cold months! We've also discovered Zeus LOVES to run with us when we go for bike rides and it's a great way for him to get a lot more energy out than when we walk him. And man, he is fast!
Since we've started training Zeus to heel, his pulling has greatly reduced. It's still there a bit, but no where near as much as before [unless we're almost home after a walk and he cannot contain his excitement and his little back end starts bouncing and moving faster than his front!].
Wherever we take Zeus, people think he is a puppy because of a) his energy and b) his size, but he is full grown! Tim always says it looks like Zeus was a larger dog, but then a shrink ray gun made him small, haha!
I have to say, it truly melts my heart seeing Tim interact with Zeus - the way Tim plays with him, talks to him and trains him and how Tim is so happy having a dog! He's wanted one for a long time. Tim also wants a cat, but I'm allergic so that's not going to happen! Tim holds a grudge about this, jokingly, for the most part. ;)
There's this painting my Grandpa did back at my parent's place. It's of a farmhouse with a laundry line attached to the side of the house. On the line hangs diapers and baby clothes. The scene is all very warm, with golden tones to it. Grandpa titled this painting, "Now We Are Three." I love this painting and thinking about it makes me feel like we've become that family of three, except with a dog instead of a baby. Tim and I have taken to calling each other "mom" and "dad" when we talk to Zeus. "Go say, 'hi' to Dad, Zeus!" or "Be good for Mom." It just started happening and we like it. Yep! He's our little boy!
